Piping Plovers Return to Georgian Bay’s
Wasaga Beach
This is the fourth year the Piping Plovers have returned
to Wasaga Beach Two breeding
pairs have nested, with a total of seven chicks being born
over the past week. This signals the success of the U.S. recovery
program for this species. Volunteers at Wasaga are watching
over this years hatchings, however cannot always protect them
from unexpected storms. Last week they lost three chicks to
the storm and 1 to a predator. Volunteer watchers try to educate
the public on the Piping Plover and what they can do to help.

The Ecology of Wasaga Beach
The fresh waters of Georgian Bay Ontario provide some of
the finest beaches in the world. Wasaga Beach claims to be
the world's longest fresh water beach. For families visiting
the beaches along Georgian Bay we encourage you to take the
opportunity to educate both yourselves and your family about
the beach habitat. In many cases the area around beaches tell
a remarkable story about area ecology and the evolving species
that rely on the fresh water to survive. A good place for
an overview of beach ecology is the Friends of Wasaga Beach
