Georgian Bay Water Levels
The Georgian
Bay Association has been instrumental in drawing attention to
the lower water levels. Recently Mary Muter representing the GBA
was interviewed on CBC to explain the lower water levels. This interview
can be found on the Georgian Bay Association website.
To fully understand the water level issues one should see the Environment
Canada website-Ontario Section, as well as the United
States Corps of Engineers web site.
If you believe our glass may soon be half empty you will be interested
in Peter Annin. Peter Annin has identified the upcoming water wars
in his book The Great Lakes Water Wars. He holds
the position of associate director for the Institutes for Journalism
and Natural Resources based in Madison Wisconsin and will be speaking
at an upcoming Georgian Bay Association meeting.
Will Georgian Bay Survive the Upcoming Water Wars
As water is being sucked out of the Great Lakes to the South,
another front on the water issues is opening up in the areas of
Algonquin, Muskoka, and Haliburton to protect their long term interests
in maintaining water levels suitable for property owners to run
their businesses and cottagers to maintain water levels for recreational
pursuits. The watersheds feeding Georgian Bay may in fact lower
the levels flowing south.
Will Georgian Bay be squeezed at both ends?
A major study is underway in Haliburton to determine how to manage
the water resource more effectively. Bonnie Feleiscaker has formed
the TSW
reservoir coalition Trent Severn Waterway. And as stated in
the December Haliburton Echo, "She wants better systems in
place to ensure that the Highlands lakes retain as much of their
water as possible. The photo illustrates the problem as she is sitting
on a dock at her Cottage with a drop of about 3 feet to the water
from a water surface that was once level or just below the dock.
