Biosphere Reserves

The Canadian Biosphere Research Network (CBRN)

The CBRN has a good photo selection on the Georgian Bay Biosphere Littoral Biosphere Reserve. The purpose of the CBRN is to connect people who are interested in biosphere reserve research ranging from work done ON the biosphere reserve concept and its implementation ( e.g., what is its significance and what are the practical applications of the concept?) to work done IN biosphere reserves relating to conservation, sustainable development and livelihoods and capacity building.

Georgian Bay Littoral Biosphere Reserve

This biosphere reserve encompasses the largest island archipelago of the North American Great Lakes. Known locally as "The Thirty Thousand Islands", it is a complex association of bays, inlets, sounds, islands and shoals lying along the edge of the Canadian Shield bedrock which rises as low lying hills and ridges on the adjacent mainland. This topography supports a rich mosaic of forest, wetlands, and rocky habitat types with associated biodiversity...............more information UNESCO-Georgian Bay Littoral

Bruce Peninsula--Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve

The Niagara Escarpment bisects the southern portion of the Province of Ontario, Canada creating an unique geological and ecological landscape. The area has a wide range of habitats; for example, it is home to plants with Arctic and Boreal affinities. There are many plant and animal species at the northern limit of their range. As well, species at the southern edge of their breeding range may be found. The oldest of its trees are Eastern White Cedars living in cliff-face forests along the length of the Escarpment. More information on the Bruce Peninsula on the Niagara Escarpment website.

Canadian Biosphere Reserves Association

The Canadian Biosphere Reserves Association CBRA is an association of Canada's 13 Canadian biosphere reserves. People in Canadian biosphere regions develop and promote innovative approaches to conservation and economic development.

Canadian Biosphere Reserve communities live and work in balance with the biosphere -- the land, water, and atmosphere that support life.

People in biosphere regions recognize that high-quality economies require high-quality environments, and that conservation is important to both.
