National Wildlife Week celebrates Canada's
North
(OTTAWA) — Canada's North will be celebrated from
April 8th to 14th during National Wildlife Week. The theme,
Canada's North, along with the slogan "Canada's North
— ours to protect, the world's to cherish," will
give Canadians the opportunity to learn about the unique ecosystems
and amazing wildlife of Northern Canada while highlighting
the issue of global climate change and its effects in the
North.
Festivals and events in celebration of National Wildlife Week
will take place across Canada throughout April. These events
are planned by many organizations, governments and individuals.Click

page in Ontario.
National Wildlife Week is celebrated each year during the
week surrounding April 10th, in honour of the late Jack Miner
who was instrumental in founding Canada's conservation movement
and is credited with saving Canada geese from extinction.
This year's National Wildlife Week theme is timely and relevant
because of increased discussion on global climate change and
the occurrence of International Polar Year, a major research
effort studying the changes to the Arctic and Antarctic climates,
wildlife and social communities.
"Global climate change is, unfortunately, very harmful
to the ecosystems of Canada's North," says Colin Maxwell,
the Canadian Wildlife Federation's executive vice president.
"This year's National Wildlife Week theme, in conjunction
with International Polar Year, will raise awareness about
this growing problem and inform Canadians on how they can
help."
The Canadian Wildlife Federation sponsors National Wildlife
Week year in co-operation with provincial and territorial
wildlife agencies, Parks Canada, the Museum of Nature and
the Canadian Wildlife Service (a division of Environment Canada).
